Love Doggy Style

Does Cupid have you down? Don't get discouraged, love is for the dogs. The scene -- Valentines Day 2007, Hong Kong. 18 young pups gather to exchange their wedding vows.

These pups were hot to trot and ready to tie the knot at yesterday's puppy love ceremony. Nine canine couples gathered at a popular shopping hot spot in downtown Hong Kong on the eve of Valentines Day, dressed in tuxes, gowns and veils. Reuters news comments, "Bells tolled as the eighteen dogs, decked in full wedding regalia, walked the aisle at a shopping mall in Causeway Bay, the city's busiest shopping neighbourhood." The event was hosted as a publicity stunt to raise awareness and funds for local animal charities. The canine couples barked bow vows and exchanged wedding chokers in lieu of traditional rings.

Events of this sort have been gaining popularity recently in the UK and the United States. This week's hound wedding helps to introduce new dog concepts to the Hong Kong market and spark interest in canine culture. Thanks Hong Kong, for showing us that marriage really has gone to the dogs.

Cosby and the Canine

A celebrity canine stole the show yesterday at the 131st Westminster Dog Show in NYC. Harry, the furry companion of comedian Bill Cosby, performed like a true champ in the final day of competitions. Harry, named after Prince Harry, remains true to his namesake -- "playful and a bit of a mischief maker," wnbc.com remarks. But there was no funny business at the show, Harry's performance was brilliant and left room for no competition, literally. As the only Dandie Dinmont enrolled in the show, the best of breed award was handed over to him with no grovels or barks about it.

But don't be fooled, this pup does not need hand outs; his impeccable training and dashing looks has afforded him the honor of No. 1 show dog in America, winning 57 competitions last year alone. Cosby's superstitions kept him away from the arena at showtime, but his daughter was there to cheer the Harry on.

For the Love of Dog

A few days before the Westminster Dog Show begins is when the real party animals come out. Iris Love, archaeologist and Dachshund enthusiast, revels in the annual opportunity to throw one of the dog world's biggest bashes. Accompanied by her two favorite quadrupeds, Daphne and Cherubino, and 500 of their closest friends, Love took over Tavern on the Green with festive attire. This year's party theme was Mardi Gras and invitees fit the bill wearing feathered masks, dachshund pendants and loads of bling. Dogs barked, beads flew through the air, and the jazz band played into the wee hours of the night.

Why does this socialite go through all the trouble? For the love of dog of course. Reporter and Westminster Bash invitee, Liz Smith, offers, "Iris just loves to dress up and wear silly hats."

The festivities continue as we lead into the main event; The 131st Annual Westminster Dog Show wrapping up today at Madison Square Garden. The lineup includes 2,628 dogs strutting their stuff and competing for best in show. Signafur will keep you posted on all the details, so stay tuned.

Couture for the climate

Brrrrr... Signafur scouts in the Big Apple froze their tales off this weekend on the lookout for hound happenings. One thing is for sure, all the pups who dared to explore the city on Saturday were dressed to the 9's, the K9's that is. Furry fashionistas on Fifth Ave were decked out in head to toe coverage.

Sunday saw warmer temperatures in New York and once again Central Park was filled with pups sporting no more than a light parka and four legged friends in Chelsea were back out on the streets in muscle tees.

Australian daycare caters to all kinds

Wagin' Tails Dog Daycare in inner Brisbane, Australia has seen it all and gives new meaning to the term "pampered pet." Does your pooch need a cut and color while you're at work? No problem, a full salon with veteran stylists can take that on. Does he have a finicky diet of only the finest? That's okay, Wagin' Tails can accommodate that too.

The pooch in the upper left is being treated to a new do, trying out pink -- the salon's most popular color for furry fashionistas. Doggy 209

A resourceful, agile canine who eluded authorities for years has recently been rescued. Allow us to introduce you to Doggy 209 --the true king of the road. The infamous pup claimed the 209km marker on an expressway in Taipei, Taiwan for his home and camped out on the side of the road for two years, taking frequent trips into the flow of traffic and presenting drivers with safety hazards.

Taipei Police tried on 52 separate attempts to capture Doggy 209 and were unsuccessful on all counts. It wasn't until a crew of canine lovers on a mission came along that the homeless hound was finally brought to safety. Within six hours the ten citizens had successfully caught Doggy 209.

Why couldn't the cops nab the notorious pooch? "Some traffic officers said that Doggy 209 had shown high intelligence, distinguishing between ordinary cars and traffic police cars. When a yellow traffic police car pulled up, Doggy 209 fled. When traffic police left food in a cage to trap it, it never went near the cage," News24.com reports.

Onlookers were in part hoping the pup would remain at large in the spirit of freedom and rebellion, but inevitably Doggy 209 will be more comfortable calling home a house and not a highway.

Mutts Make a Come Back

Popularity of pedigrees waining

"Mutts are like real couture. There are no two alike," fashion icon, Isaac Mizrahi, commented to USA Today gloating about his true love, Harry, an adopted mixed breed.

While the picture in the upper left features a pure blooded beagle sporting a Mizrahi Polo, Isaac's heart is with half breed hounds, and he's not the only one. Mutts are moving up in the dog world and are adopted at nearly the same rate as purebreds nowadays.

Michael Mountain of Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah agrees, commenting, "It's more fashionable to have a standard, old-fashioned mutt...The 'in' thing is not to have a very well-bred, very expensive dog." Mountain says the growing fascination with mixed breeds dates back to the mid 1990's when public awareness was heightened to the millions of mutts in shelters who would be euthanized. A new wave of social consciousness coupled with purebred health concerns has made mongrels the new popular pup choice.

That's right, say goodbye to the days of pedigrees ruling Park Avenue. Now a mix can mingle with the big dogs.

The Weekend Wrap Up

You may have missed it, but you won't miss out. Here's a recap of happenings in the hound world that took place over the weekend.

On Friday, extreme sport pups, baby carriage-pushing and piano playing pooches put their best paws forward during a Charm School & Talent Show at the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in New York City.

Later in the day, Honda Motors released the Vamos; a minivan designed for your mutt. The Vamos includes pooch friendly options including water and odor resistant seats, spacious fold down rear seats and tick resistant floor matts. The dogmobile is currently available in Japan for a little over $12,000 bones.

Saturday was ultra stylish in Indiana as the Alterra Sterling House sponsored an exclusive dog fashion show, displaying the latest in canine couture. As a finale to the fashion show, two hounds got hitched. All proceeds benefit the local humane society.

Sports fans got riled up on Sunday watching the much less publicized PuppyBowl III on Animal Planet where young canines competed for the championship title. Get all the final stats and details here.

Moving on to the international scene; Bangalore, India offered the 84th and 85th All-India Championship Dog Shows on Sunday. Over 400 entries were received, but only a lucky few were chosen Best in Show.

A Pup with Presidential Standards

Help this terrier get a date with the first dog

A three year old Scottish terrier from Kent, Washington has her sights on Barney Bush, the president's pooch. Kenzie, the starstruck youngster, has a huge crush on the presidential canine. Owner, Shelby Dobbs, says it's not hard to see why. "Barney is like the Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise of dogs, so he's high up on the celebrity dog scale," she said.

This pooch has even professed her love in a personalized video addressed to the first dog. In the video, with the help of doggy translations, Kenzie pleads with Barney for a date or at least an email. The lovesick terrier concludes that the two are perfect for one another; both lovers of sports, travel and recreation. The video premiered on YouTube earlier this week and has already racked up over 750,000 views.

Kenzie's parents are planning an East Coast trip this fall and hope to arrange a play date between their love struck terrier and the presidential pup.

Canine culture takes off in Tel Aviv

A land of milk and honey...and hounds. Israel's pooch population is soaring as canines become a more essential part of the family unit. There are currently 20,000 registered dogs in Tel Aviv alone, making the human to hound ratio 1 to 18.5.

"It's fun to be a dog in Tel Aviv...The city considers the needs of dogs and their owners. It allows [dogs] to live in the public domain. It's comfortable for the animals, and it's comfortable for the people," Tamara Elbaz, a dog groomer and Tel Aviv resident recently remarked in an interview with the New York Times. Elbaz has witnessed the canine scene flourish in her city, letting way to a slew of grooming and specialty shops as well as dog parks and recreation areas.

Elbaz attributes Israel's booming interest in furry friends simply to companionship -- Tel Aviv is a city saturated with new immigrants, many of whom do not yet share a common language. Having a puppy serves as an icebreaker, as a way to make connections with your surrounding community. Elbaz comments, "People approach you, you get to talking. Dogs solve the problem of loneliness in a big city."

Designers brace for the second annual NY Pet Fashion Week

Pet Fashion Week strikes again, scheduled for an August 2007 launch in New York City. Last year's show made more than a few big name stylists turn their heads and look down to take account of the impact our furry fashionistas are making. Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Juicy Couture, and Kiehl's are in the works of getting involved with the upcoming canine couture extravaganza, having already created pooch apparel lines this spring. Ralph Lauren came out with a canine cashmere sweater, Juicy Couture with a line of signature doggy sweats and rumor has it that Adidas may be jumping on board to introduce a line of four-legged footwear. With big name involvement stirring up the style industry, there's no telling how far and wide pet fashion will spread this season.

Packaged Facts, a division of MarketResearch.com, anticipates pet expenditures to burgeon to $52.4 billion by 2009. Pet Fashion Week 2007 expects equally large growth, estimating participation by over 120 vendors. The heiress to the Hilton fortune is constantly making waves with her lavish lifestyle. A Humble Doggy Domicile

Chow down on this... Charlene Grayson of Blossom Valley, an extreme canine enthusiast, has erected an $80,000 abode for her precious pooches. A proud parent of six Chow Chows, Grayson has spared no expense in converting this doghouse into a pooch palace. The doggy domicile boasts calming earth tone color schemes, elegant decor, six separate sleeping quarters and a flat screen TV permanently tuned to Animal Planet.

Grayson was inspired to create what neighbors refer to as the "Chow Mahal" in 1999 when a piece of land behind her property became available for sale. Charlene and husband quickly snatched up the real estate and designed the custom made doghouse, or should we say mansion.

Charlene reports spending most of her time in the Chow Mahal along with her furry friends. She quotes, "They're just the best companions in the world . . . My husband and I joke that the more we know about people, the more we love our dogs." The couple is currently undergoing construction to build a new Chow Mahal on their new property in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Canine Couture Gets Cosmic

January 16, 2007 – Berlin, Germany.
Four fashion forward pups strut down the runway showing off their new space age threads. NASA, more universally known for Mars exploration and placing men on the moon, has now tried their hand at canine couture. The pooches pictured are sporting the new "outlast technology," designed to comfortably withstand extreme fluctuations in temperature.

The new products were previewed yesterday in Berlin, Germany at the 'Home-Animals and Plants 2007' fair. The new releases signify the growing popularity and market for canine fashion; domestically, internationally and now possibly, inter-galactically.

Yorkie tails in a close second

For the sixteenth consecutive year, the Labrador retriever has been named the most popular U.S. pure breed. The announcement was made yesterday by the American Kennel Club after officials tallied 2006 dog owner registration data. However, after nearly two decades of undisputed victory, the Labrador may have a little competition in next year's running. And when we say little, we mean petite. The Yorkshire Terrier trotted in with second place this year, marking the first time in 67 years that a toy breed has stolen the runner up position.

What’s the reason for the recent trend? Several factors must be taken in account; smaller living quarters, metropolitan apartment-dwelling dog enthusiasts, celebrity pet appeal, and of course the fact that a Lab won’t fit in a dainty designer purse.

Jennifer Love Hewitt, star of the hit show 'Ghost Whisperer', put her pooch on anti-depressants this week upon the recommendation of a pet therapist. Charlie, a King Charles spaniel, was taken to the doggy doctor after strange behavior surfaced.
Love Hewitt remarks that Charlie was licking "intensely." Charlie's veterinarian determined the behavior to be signs of an anxiety disorder and prescribed Prozac for the pooch.

Hewitt recalls, "She started doing this weird, like, intense licking thing, where she would, like, lick the air... and she's got an anxiety disorder, so they put her on Prozac…now she's as happy as ever."

Think puppy love is a relatively new phenomenon marked by designer dog attire and day trips to the doggy spa? Well, we beg to differ. Our culture's connection to dogs dates way back. See for yourself at Feathers, Fins, and Furs, a new multimedia exhibit created by the students of John Hopkins University. Curator of the museum, Catherine Rogers Arthur offers, "This is an opportunity to view Homewood in a different way and imagine the nonhuman family members that trotted the halls and scratched the furniture."

The exhibit uncovers early America's relationship with domestic pets through a collection of antique art pieces. Examining the artwork provides valuable insights into the roots of American pet-parent relations. Many of our modern day practices stem from century old traditions. Arthur comments, "We found evidence of dogs eating off of utilitarian stoneware like kitchen crockery — not dog bowls."

Looks like a horse, acts like a hound

Reminiscent of an age old fairy tale, this is the story of a pony who thinks he's a pup. Rory the foal was brought to the Essex Horse and Pony Sanctuary after his mother rejected him at just one day old. His fragile condition and size made it difficult to raise him around the other horses, so he spent his early days with a pack of Labrador retrievers.

Sanctuary manager Sue Allery reports, "Because he was so small he slept in the office on a duvet and the dogs and cats curled up with him." Consorting with the canines led Rory to harbor a few unusual habits—drinking milk out of a dog bowl and playing fetch frisbee. "He even started picking up twigs and sticks for us to throw," Allery comments.

Sir Dave solves mathematical problems with the greatest of ease. From square roots to subtraction to long division, this dog does it all. Dave's owner, Frank Ferris, discovered his hound's hidden talent at the tender age of 5 and began cultivating his calculating skills. Now at age 7, Sir Dave has been featured on "The Tonight Show with David Letterman" to show off his skills.

The story of a cross country canine

Meet Daisy, a 12 pound 2-year old rat terrier who recently completed a 2,600 mile journey from Colorado to Tennessee and back again.
Daisy's owner, Vonda Lundstrum, reported the precious pooch missing back in April of 2006 after discovering a hole under the property fence where the tiny pup must have escaped. For months Daisy's owners hoped for the safe return of their four legged friend.

Christmas Day, nearly nine months later—1600 miles away in Knoxville, Tennessee, Tracie Crass spotted a matted fur ball trotting down the street in front of her house. Crass took the dog in, suspecting it belonged to a neighbor. With Daisy's identification tag still intact, Crass contacted the rightful owners and with the help of Knoxville's Young-Williams Animal Center, had the cross country canine flown back home.

Vonda Lundstrum, overcome with joy upon her reunion, commented, "The kindness of people gives you a reason to believe…It's the best Christmas present."

The Grammy's Go to the Dogs

Artist David Hevel uses dog sculptures to represent his latest creative project, "Diva Hound Smack Down at the Grammy's," scheduled to open at the end of the month at the Byron C. Cohen Gallery of Kansas City. The piece uses model replicas of several breed types to make playful caricatures of the stars. Speaking of the picture in the upper left, Hevel offers, "I’m making a hairless Chinese dog that’s supposed to be Barry Manilow."

Hevel's inspiration for this show is a culmination of sheer interest in exotic animals and slight mockery of this year's Grammy Awards ceremony. Among his other celebrity muses in past shows are Tyra Banks as a giraffe, Brittney Spears as a baboon and Mariah Carey portrayed as a goat.

Gina Hayes, a 4 year dog training veteran, has taken her love of obedience to a new level by opening a canine kindergarten of sorts. Here, puppies have a haven for learning simple commands and complex tricks. Hayes boasts that pooches in her class learn the basics in a matter of moments; mastering sitting within the first five minutes of class.

Does Hayes have any words of wisdom for pet parents embarking on a training program for their pup? Of course! Hayes offers, "Consistency in training a dog is extremely important. If you are not consistent they are very confused and they don't always know what you want. So sometimes you can ask them to come to you, but if you don't follow up on that all the time then sometimes they will come, sometimes they won't…consistency is very important."

"Max" takes the cake for most popular dog name in New York for another year in a row with 1,228 city dwelling canines claiming it as their name sake. "Lucky" got lucky with second place and "Princess" pulled in 3rd. The 4th and 5th most popular pooch collars read Rocky and Buddy, making the top five names unchanged since 2004.

Purebreds are also proving less popular with mutts making a name for themselves in NYC. This year 7,374 mixed breeds acquired new dog licenses in the big apple. So, if your furry friend is a mutt named Max, chances are he is in good company.

Puppy love is popping up throughout the region; Christmas Day brought about numerous pooch parties in Singapore. Four legged guests were treated to gourmet human style dog chow, costume attire and festivities. This season proved rather profitable for the dog industry in Asia, with sales on the rise for novelty items such as reindeer suits, doggy antlers and aroma therapy products for puppy.

British Pooch Sheds Major Pounds

Once a porky pooch, Pongo is now trim and active after loosing 20 lbs and winning the Pet Fit Club slimming award. This British Bowzer lost the 20 lbs over the course of a 100 day competition between 9 chubby canines (think The Biggest Loser with quadrupeds). Before joining the weight loss challenge, Pongo weighed in at a hefty 88 lbs.

Owner Roy Goodall commented, “All I wanted was for him to have a happier and healthier lifestyle and I hope that our success story will inspire anyone else with overweight pets to help them slim down."

The holidays tend to be a time for indulgence. This coming week be conscious of the quantity and type of food you provide your canine. Resist the temptation to offer tasty morsels of “people food” and remember to preserve your pup’s regular exercise routine.

Your dog’s coat may predict temperament

A recent study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science examined English cocker spaniels, drawing connections between the color of their fur and their level of aggressiveness. Other studies have been conducted in the past suggesting that Retrievers can be categorized by their fur type. The current research, headed by Joaquin Perez-Guisado of the University of Cordova, points to the possibility that fur type and color may be an indicator of personality in several breeds.

The research concludes that golden/red English cocker spaniels exhibit the most aggressive and dominant behavior among their peers. Black canines of the same breed were found to be the second most aggressive while parti-colored breeds were found to be the most mild tempered based on a 51 dog study conducted by the Spanish researcher’s team.

Pérez-Guisado commented on the findings, "Maybe the link (to coat color) is due to the fact that the ectoderm (one of the three primary germ cell layers) is where the skin and central nervous system originate in the embryo." He adds that the behavior-fur connection is a process related to genetic coding that takes place early in the dog’s life.

A recent pop culture poll crowned Britney Spears with the title of "worst celebrity dog owner" as voted by the readers of New York Dog and Hollywood Dog magazines. The editors commented saying, "Britney was the overwhelming choice... She once had three Chihuahuas and never left home without at least one of them on her arm. As soon as she met K-Fed and had kids, they disappeared."

Last years worst dog owner winner, Paris Hilton finished in second place this year for treating Tinkerbell like an accessory. In contrast, the people elected 5 time pooch parent Oprah Winfrey as the "best dog owner" of 2006.

Let's give Brit the benefit of the doubt, it's just too hard to stay upset at America's pop princess.

Korea Birthplace of First Female Clone

Fact, sometimes stranger than fiction. Pictured in the upper left hand corner is scientist Lee Byeong-chun and his research team with Bona, Bona and Bona, an Afghan hound. Believe it or not, the three pups pictured are genetically identical confirmed clones.

Bona #1 was born on June 18, 2006 with the other two clones following shortly after. Lee states that, "This was a process that must be done to see if a cloned dog has reproduction capabilities." The result of that research is yet to be determined.

Earlier this year, Lee was involved in a scandal which accused his old research team of falsifying data and embezzling research funds. Lee still stands on trial and may face jail time and loose his research position if convicted.

The 18 dog Hindu canine wedding set to commence later this month in Jaipur, India has been called off after religious officials deemed the ceremony disrespectful and cruel to the canines. The wedding would have been the biggest of it's kind and a catalyst to instigate interest in canine culture in India.

The organizers expressed their apologies for the cancelled ceremony but promised a single dog beauty pageant in exchange.

Americans spend $38.4 million annually pampering their pooches, and according to the Calcutta Telegraph, Mumbaikars are not that far behind. Canine interest is booming in India and expressed through recent fashion shows and doggy parties.

Paulette Keller of Largo, Florida was in for a big surprise when she asked her local breeder for a "small" dog. The Florida breeder sent her home with the runt of a Chihuahua's litter. Amazed with Brandy's petite frame, Paula began researching the current title holder for worlds smallest dog and thought there was no competition. She sent Brandy's picture and stats (weighing in at 1 pound 6 ounces and measuring 6 inches long) to the Guinness Book of World Records. As it turns out, big things do come in small packages; Brandy has been named the Smallest Dog in the World according to Guinness. The Keller household has endured much commotion since the recognition of their four legged record breaker with camera crews and Japanese comedy shows all trying to get a look at the tiny Teacup. "I wasn't trying to get the smallest dog in the world," Paulette said. "I just wanted a little dog."

Think ahead of the canine mind and pet proof your party gear to avoid any broken paws or upset stomachs. Here are some tips from Butcher's Dog Food to keep the holidays fun and safe for all members of the family.

1. "If you have a real tree, make sure the needles are cleaned up regularly to prevent them getting stuck in paws and throats.

2. Avoid having flashing lights on your tree, or your dog may go in for the attack or get frightened off!

3. Decorate with unbreakable baubles and keep any tinsel and ribbon high up on the tree. DON’T put white Angel hair on the tree - this is spun glass and can shred your dogs insides if digested.

Doggy Dancing continues to shake hips and wag tails in Great Britain and beyond. This weekend, a select few in Manchester witnessed a show of choreographed pup precision.

The art of doggy dancing has roots in the 80's and is being slowly perfected. Boston Braces for 3,000 Canines

Today in Boston, show dogs will primp and prune in preparation for this weekend's Bay Colony Cluster Dog Show taking place at the Bayside Exposition Center. Upwards of 3,000 canine participants and 30,000 human fans are expected to attend the spectacle and root for the Best in Show.

Pictured in the upper left, Deana, a hairless Chinese Crested and a hopeful competitor, patiently awaits a blow dry. The hairless Chinese Crested is a rare breed described by the AKC as, "fine-boned, elegant and graceful." The breed has an unusual pattern of hair growth; completely bald except for patches of long flowing hair on the head, tail and feet. As the story goes, the Chinese Crested originated in Africa and was found by Chinese trading ships and used as a ratter on board. The societal function of the Crested has changed significantly over time, but the unusual appearance and appeal has remained.

Small Dogs and the Socialite Scene

A recent article in the New York Times highlights society's growing attraction to small dogs and marks them as the ultimate fashion statement. Pictured in the upper left is Muffin, a New York Yorkie, privy to her own custom wardrobe. Muffin, among many other lap dogs in the city presents an opportunity for pet parents to take their love of the lavish to the next level.

On the whole, petite dog breeds have been booming in popularity over the past decade; registration of the Brussels griffon alone has skyrocketed a whopping 231 percent during the last ten years.

Owners are relishing in the opportunity to spoil themselves and their furry friends. And why not, with a slew of designers, restaurants and hotels jumping up to cater to both pet and parent. New York's trendy W Hotel offers a pooch-friendly Woof Program including doggy pillows and special treats placed on them at bedtime. In addition, these arm candy canines are increasingly welcome in the workplace, a survey polled by the pet products association reveals that upwards of 20% of employers welcome dogs in the office.

Humans and canines may share a common method of communication according to a new Applied Animal Behavior Science study conducted by a team of scientists from the University of Budapest. The group studied how well people with varying amounts of dog experience could accurately describe the emotional content of a dog's bark. The barks represented five emotional states: fear, aggressiveness, despair, playfulness and happiness.

Peter Pongracz, the team's leader, discerned that even people with relatively no canine experience could accurately identify a dog's emotional state based on his barking patterns alone. Pongracz suggests that most mammals communicate on the same acoustic level and therefore have the ability to understand one another.

Emotions are expressed in varying degrees of pitch, tone and frequency; lower pitches denoting aggression and higher pitches denoting submission. Pongracz offers an explanation and states, "This relationship could have formed the basis of an evolutionary ritualization process whereby low pitched vocalizations tended to signal aggression because larger animals are more likely to win contests...and high pitched vocalizations became predictors of submission or friendly intent."

Update on the 2006 AKC Agility Trials

This weekend dog enthusiasts around the globe took a moment to paws and tune in for the 2006 AKC National Dog Championships broadcast live from Long Beach, California. Incase you missed out; Signafur has the summarized scoop…

Nearly 2,500 canines, spanning 150 breeds and representing 16 countries competed this weekend for the prestigious title of "Best in Show" at the championships. Viewers were biting nails, had tails between legs as the contestants displayed their skills and gave their all for the national title and $225,000 in prizes, the largest amount in dog show history.

Who went home with the loot? James of Fairfax Station, a.k.a. "Diamond Jim," an English Springer Spaniel from Virginia. Diamond Jim pranced off with the blue ribbon and the top cash prize of $50,000.

Breakthroughs in Canine Communication

Our lives have gone mobile; you can reach almost anyone with the push of a button… but your pets? You can now thanks to a canine invention contest in Canada that inspired William Franzin to create a mobile communication device for Fido. The PetSafe Voice Trainer functions much like a walkie-talkie and allows parents to give commands to their furry friends by speaking into the mouthpiece. The message is delivered to a small voice box attached to the pooch's collar and signals Rover that it is time to come home.

The invention is in it's prototype stages, but additional features are being developed, such as an automatic voice warning that states, "this dog is lost" when the collar is taken too far away from it's target destination. The sound of knocking on a door as well as a food can opening may also be added to the system to entice the pup to return. The PetSafe Voice Trainer is expected to be on shelves by early 2008.

One dog policy infuriates pet owners

China recently began enforcing a stringent code of dog laws mandating a "one dog per household" rule. Additionally, size standards have been issued; canines in excess of 14 inches are also banned under the new policy. Any dog over the allotted limit is subject to confiscation by the officials.

The situation has become politically tense; reminiscent of days passed in Communist China, and has forced pet owners to hide their beloved animals and be wary of their neighbors. The dog policy states," Any individual has the right to criticize ... anyone who is doing anything against the regulations, and report them to the residential committee, the village committee or the relevant department."

The new laws spring from a recent rabies scare and the government's attempt to control the dog population. Protests and rallies have sparked throughout Beijing with no sympathy from authorities.

Heads Up on a New Trend

What does your Shiba Inu, a Lawrence Welk record, and a little two step have in common? Doggy Dancing of course; the new show of canine coordination that is sweeping the nation. Otherwise known as Doggy Freestyle, this artistic expression allows pups to strut their stuff to a dance beat. Expect to see lots of the four standard doggy dance moves: spins, weaves, twirls, and walk backs (think synchronized swimming with more fur less water).

Coral Pethers, a dog handler gone dog dancer, comments, " Most people get a mental picture of a dog being up in your arms and you waltzing around with them in a tutu, but it's not." Pethers argues that Doggy Dancing is a very technical and strenuous sport that requires great agility on the part of the dog as well as the handler.

Who makes the best four legged dance partner? Pethers says poodles and border collies take the cake.

Spotlight on Whoopee

Allow us to introduce you to one of the top contestants and dog show favorites at this year's upcoming AKC Agility Invitational in Long Beach, California. Whoopee, a Pyrenean shepherd, named after Whoopi Goldberg (resemblance questionable) has been putting on quite a show collecting blue ribbons around the country. Whoopee's specialty: the agility course, an obstacle track comprised of tunnels, weave poles, jumps and seesaws. What is this pup's secret? According to her handler, Linda Bohm, Whoopee has a tooth for fine cheese and gives it her all for a few slices of Chateaubriand at the finish line.

The AKC Agility Invitational is being held December 2nd and 3rd, 2006 and will be broadcast on Animal Planet.

The Story of a Presidential Pardon

Flyer and Fryer, the Whitehouse Thanksgiving turkeys received a presidential pardon this year after W's dog ruffled a few feathers. President Bush's Scottish terrier, Barney, got his exercise chasing the two birds around the Rose Garden this morning. President Bush remarked, "Instead of chasing the soccer ball, he chased the bird. And it kind of made the turkey nervous. See, the turkey was nervous to begin with. Nobody's told him yet about the pardon I'm about to give him."

In a ceremony that dates back to 1947, the president pardoned Flyer and Fryer, and sent them to Disneyland in California to be the honorary marshals of the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

A new service as part of the doggy daycare trend is turning heads and wagging tails in Williston, Vermont. The new pup pampering service offers pick up and delivery of your precious pooch in what else but a big purple school bus. In town, the purple coach has become synonymous with canines and is not easily missed while making its rounds. Driver Dana Begins associates her service with that of an elementary school bus driver and notes, "It's exciting, just going around picking up people's dogs, they really treat them like their kids at that point, out waiting for you to pick them up."

This Deli Goes to the Dogs

A new cafe in Mexico City caters to the city's most discriminating canines. The central cafe boasts a pup friendly atmosphere and mouth watering treats like ostrich liver biscuits with mashed potato icing.

Bow-Wow Deli is the creation of Miki Nakai, a Japanese entrepreneur with a vision to create a social doggy haven in the dog eat dog hub of Mexico City. Bow-Wow deli began when Nikai started cooking canine friendly meals for her finicky eater, an African greyhound. Soon her cuisine spread through the local canine community and left all pups panting for more.

This Thursday, among the list of reasons to be thankful, we've decided to throw in "bowzer being a good boy." With so much activity taking place in the home, between the guests and the turkey and the festivities, your four-legged friends might find cause to cause a scene. Prepare you pup a few days in advance for Thursdays feast to ensure an uninterrupted meal. Sarah Hodgeson, a NY dog trainer, offers up a few relevant etiquette tips from her new book:

* "Establish proper etiquette by creating a special place by your (front) door where your dog can wait ... when company arrives."
* "If you allow your dog to loiter nearby while you are eating, you will almost certainly experience interruptions. ... Politely ask guests to help civilize your dog by ignoring him until the meal has ended."
* Teach your dog "to lie on a floor mat while you dine. To prevent hunger tension, feed your dog his own meal before you sit down to enjoy yours. Then send him to his special mat, instructing him to "Settle."'
* "Table manners for dogs can be reduced to one basic maxim: Eat and drink only from your bowl."
* "If you want to share leftovers (with your dog), then do so in a manner unlikely to disturb your human guests. Wait until you have finished your meal, and then place a sensible portion in his bowl."

How much will that doggy in the window cost you? It all depends on popular trends. Paula Doohan, a 37 year old Irish woman has been making a few tails spin on the emerald isle. The mother of two recently unlocked her skills as a dog listerner while trying to help her bad mannored German Shepard. Doohan exhausted several conventional methods of dog training before turning to a more psychotherapeutic approach.
After researching pet behaviorists, Doohan studdied under the famous British dog listener, Jan Fennell. Doohan comments that Fennell taught her "to read dog signals by their ears or their tail...It is all about listening to the dog." Now Paula and her pooch have no trouble communicating.
With her disciplined doggy and new found talent, Doohan has returned to Ireland determined to pursue a career in dog listening.

A new study conducted in the UK is encouraging pet owners to put down the pint and pick up the leash. The research, headed by the University of Portsmouth concludes that walking a dog can actually curb loneliness and depression.
"How," you ask? The study states that dog owners are more likely to stick to a regular exercise routine despite their own mood, for the benefit of their pet. In addition, "the exercise gave them a better overall sense of well-being as they often met like-minded people, leaving them feeling happier." A similar study by Natural England found that being outside can help to boost physical fitness and prevent diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, and heart disease.

This pug got canned at yesterday's annual Tompkins Sq. Park Dog Parade in NYC. All dressed in rags, Herbie and owner Todd Welch, got festive as city sanitation workers with a Sesame Street twist. Among the other attendees were retrievers in Siamese suits, a weimaraner in a tiger get-up, and three animal amigos rocking cowboy couture. Now the Village is preparing for tonight's human (well, sort of) Halloween parade. We'll keep you posted.

A day in the life of a mutt

Today at an elementry school in Dunedin, one dog and 457 helpful humans broke the world record for "longest human tunnel a dog has ever ran through." What, you didn't know that was a category? Oh, it's serious... the last dog runs through human tunnel record was set earlier this year at a whopping 394 participants. The students of Anderson's Bay School blew that number out of the water by building a tunnel 15% longer.
The star of the show, a Border Collie named Aidee, trained for the event along side her owner, Lyn van Beers. When Aidee is not whizzing through 914 legs, she can be found frolicking around the Otago Canine Training Club of New Zealand.

Animal expert, Kim Odgen, has compiled a 12 song CD of tunes that are apparently pleasing to the K-9 ear. In her research, Odgen tested several genres of music and lyrics on 214 dogs to fine tune the canine compilation. According to one report, her researched showed that, "dogs love sambas, they hate Johnny Cash, and ninety-three percent of them wanted to hear a song about having a dog bed."

Dog Day Masquerade

Times Square had a good scare yesterday as over 50 canines in costumes came down to compete in the annual Dog Day Masquerade, a tradition that celebrates and rewards the art of creative dress. This Sunday, characters ranging from pumpkins to pirates to princesses were seen flooding the area surrounding 42nd street.
The Times Square Top Dog prize, awarded for best representation of Times Square's past and present, was given to Indy, a 5-month old mini Dachshund sporting a TKTS booth costume.
Two pups won the hearts of the judges for the Best in Show Prize; Pepe the ghost and Oliver the sheriff went home with joint honors and tied for first place.

Earlier in the week an LA based publicity stunt promised to deliver Desperate Housewife, Nicolette Sheridan eating a proper portion of puppy chow. "Dine with Doggy Day", what began as a Californian phenomenon has spread nationwide to New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Nebraska and West Virginia to be recognized this Saturday, October 21st.
Kicking it off two nights early, festivities began last night at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza and didn't deliver the full effect promised. Houswives star Nicolette Sheridan took one look at the bowl in front of her and decided to pass on the pooch food, stating, "This is not Fear Factor."
Despite Sheridan turning down dog chow, the night was still a success boasting a best dressed Bow-Wow contest and a pet psychic paw reader.

The Dogs Down Under, a documentation of sorts

Australian artists Yvone Doherty and Justin Spiers have constructed a creative project to document a country's relationship with their animals. By setting up amusement park style photo booths and catching candid moments of canines and their families, the artists are beginning to piece together the varied connections that people form with their pets. Joint creator of the project, Doherty, observes, "Some people treat their animals like objects, and you get these loving, doting people who treat their pets like children...I think for some people animals are more important than humans."
The duo have plans to conquer the entire country of Australia visiting all walks of life, from aristocrats to aborigines, young and old alike to document the relationships with dogs down under.

So, Hollywood's gone to the dogs...but celebs dining on doggy food, has it gone too far? Granted there are a few people who wouldn't mind seeing some big names nosh on a plate of puppy chow; well, get ready, because it's happening this Thursday in Los Angeles.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared Saturday to be a statewide "Dine with Your Dog Day", and in accordance with that, Nicolette Sheridan of Desperate Housewives will be kicking off the festivities by eating a bowl of canine cuisine compliments of Natural Balance Dog Food Co. Natural Balance hopes to show the public that dog food can be tasty too. Proceeds from the event benefit local animal charities. A teacup Chihuahua delicately trots down the runway to welcome in L.A.'s first annual "Dressed to Kilt" event which kicked off the Los Angeles Fashion Week. Sporting grey cowl neck knit and traditional print kilt, this puppy is ready to ring in the festivities that have been an industry standard in New York for years. Since 2003, "Dressed to Kilt" has been exposing New Yorkers to the Scottish textile industry and dishing out the prettiest in plaid. This year, Scottish textile designers are hoping to establish a niche in the lucrative West Coast market and have taken a few crowd pleasing four-legged friends on board to help.

Central Park Paws is proud to present the 5th annual My Dog Loves Central Park County Fair. Ahoy! The Second Annual Canine Cruise

Fleet Week? Forget about it...this fall New York's harbors were swollen with petite pups of all breeds partaking in the cities second annual Canine Cruise. The Ship set sail on a three hour carouse up and down the Hudson carrying 422 humans and 250 canines. The guests dressed appropriately sporting pirate inspired attire and sailor's whites, prepared to party, and set sail. Activities ranged from a runway show, vendor give-away goodies, pooch portraits and paintings, to a special performance by a canine magician. The night was a success; people mingled, puppy's played, the waters weren't too "Rufff", and the ship returned safely to shore.

The month was established to acknowledge the millions of cats and dogs without loving homes who are euthanized annually. From Lebanon with Love

Over 300 displaced dogs and cats were rescued from the rubble in the aftermath of the Lebanon war this week in an operation coined Paws for Peace. The hundreds of stray animals were carefully loaded onto cargo planes and delivered to an American animal shelter near Kanab, Utah. At the shelter, the animals will be nursed back to health while they await adoption. The effort, costing in excess of $250,000 dollars was funded for the most part through individual donations.
Displayed in the left hand corner is Safa Hojeij, founder of Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; an instrumental organization in the rescue effort. Safa is pictured petting Ringo, on of the many abandoned animals, and escorting him to his new home at the Kanab animal shelter.
